The Reason Behind Serena Williams' Nike Catsuit Is Amazing

Last week was one big ball of black girl magic and we were enthralled. While Amanda Seales delivered our favorite gut-check of the year, Serena Williams returned to major season on the courts of Rolland Garros for the French Open and she was a superhero.
Serena, who has a history of bringing eye-catching gear to her on court appearances, teamed up with her Nike design family for a black catsuit. This isn't something that's out of the ordinary for Serena but, the reasoning behind her sleek custom chic was one that made all of us love her even more. The suit, Serena told Tennis Channel's Jon Wertheim, was a confident ode to motherhood and feeling amazing in your skin.

- The original design was blue.
- It was intended to be a power suit (meant to help her recover).
- When Serena received the first sample, the waist sash was red — it was supposed to be black. But she loved it and made sure it remained part of the final design.
- It took two years to take the suit from ideation to the court this week.
Shortly after giving birth to her daughter, Williams suffered blood clots, an issue that predated her pregnancy. She explained to the BBC's Saj Chowdhury how a form-fitting bodysuit can be practical during a match.
"I had a lot of problems with [blood clots]—I don't know how many I have had in the past 12 months," she said. "It definitely has little functionality to it. It's a fun suit, but it's also functional so I'm able to play without any problems."
We love Serena for her honesty and the opportunity to embrace motherhood, the triumphs and the trials, on her own terms. Now, if only we could grab her bedazzled Nike Cortez's.
